Torsional Vibration

An induced draft (ID) fan system at a refinery experienced a failure of the spool piece in the flexible disc coupling. EDI performed field tests to diagnose the cause of the coupling failure. The VFD was exiciting a torsional resonance within the operating speed range. An alternate coupling containing rubber blocks was recommended to solve the torsional vibration problem.
